Antique Carved Gilt Wood Seated Monkey Figure
Frontal, squared, and entirely still — the gold worn back to the wood at every place a hand would fall.

CONTEXT: A monkey carved from a single block and seated square on its plinth, one arm rising across the shoulder in the only gesture the figure permits itself. The carving is reductive to the point of abstraction — the body a single swelling mass, the face flattened to two eyes and a muzzle — and the effect is far closer to modern sculpture than to anything decorative. What survives of the gilding survives in patches, worn through at every raised edge to the yellow bole beneath, so the surface now reads as a map of where it was handled. Figures of this kind belonged to household shrines rather than temples, and were regilded periodically as an act of merit, which is why the gold sits over an older ground.
CONDITION: Good, with substantial and attractive loss to the gilt surface. Stable. Old shrinkage crack to the base.
