CONTEXT: When Mary Boone opened at 420 West Broadway in 1977, she was twenty-three years old and SoHo was still becoming itself. Her gallery went on to define the decade — launching Schnabel, Fischl, and Clemente and helping invent the market for contemporary art as we know it. She later expanded across the street, then to 57th Street, then Chelsea, each move tracking the geography of the art world's own ambitions.
