The carving is reductive to the point of abstraction — the body a single swelling mass, the face flattened to two eyes and a muzzle — and the effect is far closer to modern sculpture than to anything decorative. What survives of the gilding survives in patches, worn through at every raised edge to the yellow bole beneath, so the surface now reads as a map of where it was handled.
